Raccoons are fascinating creatures. They are omnivores and are mainly active at night. As they parade their vicinity under the cover of darkness, they live behind long trails that you can easily follow. Raccoon prints bear a striking resemblance to a human handprint, but there are some unique differences. With their adept fingers, they can easily catch prey and pick up food items.

As stated earlier, raccoon prints are similar to handprints. Therefore, the most obvious sign to look for is five fingers imprinted in the mud. These fingers are slightly symmetrically (meaning they are almost parallel), and this feature helps tell them apart from opossums and muskrats. Opossums have wide-splayed toes. While muskrats have five toes also, the fifth toe is rarely imprinted in the soil. 

Dimensions

There are some differences in size between the front and hind paw tracks of a raccoon. Let's briefly take a look at them:

Front Track

• A raccoon's front track is typically 1.5 - 3.2 inches long, while it is 1.4 to 2.9 inches wide. 
• It has small sharp claws appended to the tip of the toes. 
• The palm pad is C-shaped and is slightly wider on the outside. 
• The front track also contains a small mound in the middle of the track - thanks to the negative space at the end of the palm pad. 
• The front track is smaller than the hind track. 

Hind Track

• A raccoon's hind track is typically 1.4 to 4.1 inches long, while it is 1.3 to 3 inches wide. 
• Toe 1, which is the inside toe, registers slightly lower than the rest. 
• When compared to the front track, the toes of the hind track points more forward. 
• The palm pad is large and curved. It also gets larger towards the outside. 
• It also has much less negative space at the posterior end, when compared to the front track. 
• A raccoon's hind track is larger than the front track. 

Walking Pattern
Another thing to look out for is the walking pattern of raccoons. Raccoons move in a ‘diagonal pattern' - similar to a deer. What this means is that their tracks are usually paired with the left hind foot placed next to the raccoon's right forefoot as the animal walks along. This unique pattern makes their track easy to identify.
